Uncommon Causes of Back Pain and How They Can Be Treated

The causes of back pain can vary from trauma, injury or poor posture over the years. As more and more people spend time working at computers throughout the day, the number of those complaining of upper back pain, neck pain and shoulder pain has increased. The majority of upper back pain cases can be attributed to one or both of the following the causes; muscular irritation and joint dysfunction.

The shoulder girdle is attached to the scapula and posterior of the rib cage by large muscles. These muscles often become irritated and painful which may be difficult for the patient to work out. Repetitive motion and diminished strength due to lack of use, and over used muscles can result in pain. Muscle strain, injuries related to sports, auto accidents, or other types of injuries can cause pain from muscular irritation.

Two joints connect the ribs with the vertebrae in the thoracic spine on each side. Any type of impairment of these joints can cause upper back pain. Anyone suffering from this type of pain is typically treated with manual manipulation to help the joints become more mobile and alleviate any discomfort. In order for the symptoms to remain at bay, it is recommended that patients follow an exercise program at home that includes stretching exercises for both the spine and shoulders. There are also strengthening exercises that should also be included in any type of exercise regimen. Physicians also recommend aerobic conditioning to help maintain back pain relief.

In addition to these types of manual treatments, patients are also prescribed different types of pain medication to help alleviate any pain that they may be experiencing. These medications can include ibuprofen or a COX-2 inhibitor to help alleviate any inflammation that may occur as a side effect of upper back pain.

Since there is very little motion and a large amount of stability throughout the thoracic spine, disc herniations, spinal stenosis, degenerative disc disease or instability are rarely associated with this type of pain. Upper back pain is rarely attributed to thoracic disc disease, degenerated discs or herniated discs. To effectively diagnose thoracic disease or injury the patient will likely be required to undergo an MRI scan. Any type of significant impact or trauma can result in a fracture of the thoracic vertebrae.

If you suffer from any type of back pain you may want to investigate what spinal decompression can do for you. This treatment will help you avoid any invasive surgery, medications, a long recovery time and huge treatment related expenses.

At Central Florida Spine, we treat patients with the "Faria Method". The "Faria Method" is a non-invasive, non-surgical treatment of Disc problems that allow patients to avoid back surgery, harmful pills and has a 95% success rate.
