Treating Obstructive Sleep Apnea

Obstructive Sleep Apnea or OSA is a breathing disorder that causes a person to wake up many times during the night gasping for air. This occurs when the muscles of the body relax during sleep, causing the upper airway to collapse and interrupt a person's breathing. There are increased chances of this condition if one has permanent or temporary brain injury, excess soft tissue or reduced muscle tone.
Some of the major health problems caused by this condition include high blood pressure, morning headache, erectile dysfunction, lack of memory or concentration, insomnia, increased urination, anxiety, loud snoring, depression and extreme drowsiness during day time. In children, the airway is blocked due to enlarged adenoids and tonsils, thus leading to OSA. Given below are some of the obstructive sleep apnea treatment options.
Diagnosing Obstructive Sleep Apnea
A certified sleep medicine physician can determine whether you have OSA. The severity of your condition is evaluated with the help of a sleep study or polysomnogram. Usually, the most common and first step in treatment is a nasal CPAP machine. Since adjusting to the device is problematic for most patients, surgical treatment is considered more beneficial and practical.
Obstructive Sleep Apnea Treatment Options
Surgical options for OSA treatment are listed below:
  • Tracheostomy is a surgical procedure in which the physician makes an opening through the neck to the windpipe. Then he would insert a tube through it for creating an airway.

  • UPPP or Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty is advised if the patient is having excess soft tissue of the uvula and soft palate. When extra tissues are surgically removed, the upper airway is opened. However, there are chances of the symptoms recurring within 5 years.

  • Genioglossus advancement involves advancing the muscles of the tongue base forward on a small piece of bone attached to the mandible. The hypopharyngeal airway is enlarged as a result, and this is combined with other surgical procedures to correct a narrow airway.

  • Tonsillectomy is done for removal of enlarged adenoids or tonsils of children for creation of air passage that is unobstructed.

  • Hyoid Myotomy helps in advancing the tongue base forward so that the airway is opened. Genioglossus advancement and UPPP may accompany the surgery.

  • The surgeon may recommend distraction osteogenesis for newborns and young children if they are having severe abnormalities of the bone like Treacher Collins Syndrome, hemifacial microsomia and Pierre Robin sequence.

  • With Maxillomandibular advancement, an option is provided for bringing the lower as well as upper jaw to the appropriate place. Thus, the airway is enlarged and the muscles in that area are tightened.

Aging Is Not For The Weak - It's For The Strong!

Everyone ages eventually. Some people may age gracefully and others may not. Read on for ways to stay young longer and age better.
Increase the amount of resveratrol in your diet. It has been shown that eating a low-calorie diet can slow down the aging process. Resveratrol can be found in nuts and grapes and can also have an anti aging effect. The substance itself is also derived from Japanese knotweed, which is frequently used to produce resveratrol supplements. You can also find it in a shrub from South America called Senna Quinwuangulata.
Put less emphasis on the little things. Your copay is meant to ensure that you receive an excellent quality of care from your doctor; let him analyze your measurements while you focus on the more important things in life. Paying too much attention to the numbers, may mean missing out on things in your life.
With age, a lot of people are simply not able to live on their own anymore. The effects of aging makes it harder to care for yourself as well as you once did. When this time comes, choosing a good nursing home or assisted living facility may become the right choice. It may not be something we want to do, yet it is much safer than living alone unable to care for ourselves. There are professionals who work at the facility who are licensed and able to give you any assistance that you may need.
Do your best to bring happiness to the people you are close to. Make others happy to help make yourself feel great. Happiness is something that doesn't cost a penny, and yet it's one of the greatest gifts you can give and receive.
No matter where you are living, decorate it to make it feel like home. As we age, it becomes apparent that our living environment may not be exactly what we had thought it would be. When you move to a new place, surround yourself with things that feel homey and cozy.
As you age, you will come to think of your home as your sanctuary. When life becomes stressful, you should be able to return to your home and enjoy yourself in a highly personal, comforting environment. Home will be a place where you will feel more at ease.
Sugar causes a host of diseases, including diabetes, which can shorten a person's lifespan. Sugar decreases an individual's lifespan, and it causes aging to speed up. There is a lot of scientific evidence showing that sugar can cause serious health problems. including shortening the lifespan of all animals.
To put it in a simple way, you can help yourself prevent heart disease by eating less red meat and more fish. It has been shown that byproducts produced after the consumption of meat can lead to clogged arteries, which in turn can also lead to heart disease. Fish is full of healthy fats which are believed to slow down the clogging and help you to live a long, healthy life.
Take every measure to remove objects from your house that can cause a fall. Remove throw rugs that you can trip over, chairs that are wobbly, and so on. Seniors are more prone to falls that cause serious injuries like fractures and even death. Try walking at least three times a week for thirty minutes. A great way to increase bone density and prevent fractures is to combine weight training with supplemental vitamin D and calcium.
Now that you have read this article, you have the knowledge you require to postpone the aging process. Remember to stay positive throughout the process and good luck!

10 time-proven tips to stop loss of hair effectively

All women crave for lustrous healthy locks of hair. We would readily pay a pretty penny to have hair back. But in reality the majority of us don't know that such simple things as day regimen, considerable everyday hair care, healthy eating, can really work wonders in course of time. That is the reason why so many of people face dandruff with loss of hair at long last.
Here are ten useful pieces of advice that would help you avoid the issue of baldness and change your life:
Try to consume more cheese, fresh fruits and vegetables, spinach, and drink a plenty of milk.
Supply the head skin with nutrients. It is necessary to rub oil into the scalp and wash your hair regularly. Rub oil on your scalp and hair and wash it out at least three times a week to nourish your head skinscalp It is necessary to wash out oil completely throughout the day, otherwise it will catch dust and dirt that will stuff pores of the scalp.
Still if you are allergic to cosmetic hair oil, you'd better use medical oil to nourish your scalp. As a variant, give chance to hair lotion or balsam without oil components. These hair loss remedies feed your head skin with basic nutrients and vitamins.
Henna is thought to be an excellent conditioner of natural origin for the scalp, but, alas, it causes a bad effect upon the healthy state of your hair. Being a good conditioner, it will gradually make it dry and weak. Therefore, it is recommended to wash away henna and rub oil into hair subsequently, thus, only then you can wash your hair with shampoo.
It is necessary to wash your hair when you finish physical excercises in the gym or outdoors, after jogging, and so on, when your scalp sweats especially much.
From time to time you can do some chemical hair waving or hair straightening, but don't overdo with ityou should be always careful with it. Since in the contrary case it will damage your hair structure.
Thermal processing is another thing that can lead to loss of hair. So it would be better to avoid hair driers, hot oil or water.
Comb your hair when they are dry. Never comb wet hair. Make use of a towel to wipe your hair, but avoid driers.
Physicians recommend to take in more bioactive additives that are designed especially for making your hair better. By doing so, you will supply basic nutrients and vitamins to the hair follicles from inside. One of such additives is Provillus, a herbal regrow hair pills for men and women.

Managing Cravings with EFT

There are several ways to manage cravings. You can:

Attempt to stop eating the food you crave entirely (out of sight
out of mind).
Modify your eating habits around a particular food, i.e. cut back
on the quantity or how often you indulge.
Use EFT to end the attachment you have to this particular food.

1. Stop Eating the Food you Crave

Eliminating the offending food entirely is rarely successful. We
can only limit ourselves for so long before we go crazy, eating
everything in sight to make up for the deprivation. This also
introduces deprivation and control issues, which many have
trouble with leftover from childhood. Would it be better to learn
to enjoy your favorites without losing control around them?

2. Modify your Eating Habits

Modifying your behavior can be successful, but it can also be
difficult because even though we want to change, it seems that
despite our best efforts, we still find ourselves craving the
same things, day after day. It is the "how" that stops us. How
can we change a behavior that is a habitual response? How can we
stop doing what we don't want to do? There are literally
thousands of diet and weight loss books and most offer nothing
more useful than the "eat less, exercise more" advice. If it were
simply a matter of doing what we know we should do, there would
be no obesity epidemic, but it's not that simple. We need to know
HOW.

3. Use EFT to end the Attachment to a Particular Food
EFT is often helpful to diminish or demolish the cravings. It can
be your HOW. How to change habits that you want to be rid of, how
to create new, better habits, that support what you want, instead
of what you don't. EFT is simple to learn, and effective.

If you don't yet know how to do EFT, read this brief explanation,
then download and print the worksheets, instructions and
reminders all in one convenient PDF packet.

4. Stop Talking Yourself Into It

You've said you are going to stop nighttime snacking, and then
the voices start, "I've been good all day, I deserve a treat,
just one won't hurt..." You're basically talking yourself into
it, and then you're off and running to the kitchen. Most of us
find that once we say yes to that voice, there's no holding
ourselves back.

As soon as you realize you are doing the "talk myself into it"
routine, start using EFT immediately. Catching yourself in the
act is difficult at first, but if you keep an open mind, you will
start to notice. No matter where you are or what you are doing,
you can instantly perform an EFT procedure on yourself, and get
quick results. You don't need to wait until later, until the
atmosphere is just right, or until you are alone or somewhere you
can relax. You can do it while driving, you can do it in a crowd
standing on the corner.

Examples of EFT for Ending Cravings

The first round you might notice the craving is somewhat reduced
(or it could disappear entirely), but it will likely be lessened.
Once you have done one round, re-rate your desire for the food,
and if it is still high (more than a six), do another round of
EFT right then:

Set-up: "Even though I still want to eat _________, I'm fine just
the way I am."

Reminder: "Still want to eat _________."

While I'm doing the EFT round, I might find myself thinking
things such as, "It's not that I want to eat them all, it's just
that once I start I can't stop."

So, for the next round I'll use that statement:

Set-up: "Even though I can't stop eating cookies once I get
started, I deeply and completely accept myself anyway."

Say the "even though" part with gusto, you really mean it! You
are okay, just the way you are.

Reminder: "Can't stop"

This round might lead to, "That's not true, I can decide how much
I want, I just don't want to limit myself," so the next round
might be:

Set-up: "Even though I hate to limit myself, I deeply and
completely..." or "Even though I don't want to limit myself," or
whatever words fit your situation.

Reminder: "No limits"

Make this process yours and let your personal thoughts guide you.
Doing this will help you unearth core issues and beliefs you may
not have realized were there.

More often than not what happens with these simple and effective
techniques is you will stop using them. Not because they don't
work, but because they do. You will stop because you aren't ready
to give up your eating habits - you like the food, you enjoy the
taste, the pleasure you gain from the eating is greater than the
pleasure you anticipate by making a change in your habits. It's
as if you say to yourself, "Screw it, I don't care. I want it
now, and I'm going to have it." Much like a small child, you are
simply feeding your instant desire, and that's okay too.

Be gentle with yourself. Realize you will do this on occasion,
and accept it. It doesn't make you a failure, it simply proves
you are human. Accept yourself as you are. If you make a
commitment to do the EFT exercises, even though you don't want
to, you will reach success.

In my work reluctance to do something that will work explains why
people continue to seek something new. They read new books, they
try new diets (witness Atkins, now South Beach Diet), they ask
each other (usually their overweight friends) what they are doing
(why not ask someone without a weight problem instead?). The
answer is they don't really want to make a change for the better,
they just want the easy fix. Give me a pill, a simple food plan,
make it easy for me, and I'll do it. I can keep on any plan for
the short-term, lose some weight, then as I'm gaining it back I
can just blame myself. It's my fault for stopping the diet. It's
my fault, for not staying on the plan.

This is not a healthy way to live. Take back your power. You
decide what you will or won't do every day. Stop giving that
power to others - stop blaming yourself for not staying on
someone else's plan, and make your own plan.

This is the single most important thing in anyone's change
process: Realizing what you want for your health, your body, your
life, is more important than what you get by the instant
gratification.

Ayurvedic Treatment of Fibromyalgia (CFS)

Fibromyalgia is a recently recognized disorder that is regarded as
a chronic condition associated with the experience of non-inflammatory
pain and tenderness in muscles, ligaments, joints and fatigue.
Fibromyalgia is a relatively common condition, estimated to affect
about four percent of the general population.
It is very similar to chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS); Only point of
difference is presence of musculoskeletal pain in fibromyalgia and
that of fatigue in CFS. Low level of Serotonin is considered to be
most important biochemical criteria. The primary treatment goals
should include raise serotonin levels, improve sleep quality, and
assure adequate magnesium levels.

Symptoms:

Generalized aches or stiffness at many sites for more than three months.
Generalized fatigue
Chronic headache including migraines
Sleep disorder, particularly timings of cycles
Neuronal and psychological complaints
Swelling
Numbness/ tingling sensations

Ayurvedic View:

It can be described as 'Mansa Dhatugat and Mansavrut Vata'
Fibromyalgia is perceived as a Vata imbalance. Vata is the main imbalance
and Aggravated Vata destabilizes the nervous system and can create
hypersensitivity leading to pain and tenderness.
Accumulation of Ama (toxins) and shrotorodha are also contributory factors.

Ayurvedic Approach of Fibromyalgia and CFS Treatment

The aggravation of Vata dosha and accumulation of Ama (toxins) are
the primary causes and should be treated mainly. Associated weak digestion,
constipation, and effects of chronic stress should also be tackled.

Panchakarma Therapy

Pre-purification Measures namely 'snehan' and 'swedan are very useful to
balance 'Vata' and to loosen the toxins. Snehan is the Herbalized Oil
Massage. This oil is applied to the entire body with a particular type of
massage. Swedan is sudation or sweating and is given immediately following
the snehan. An herbal concoction may be added to the steam to further
enhancement of effect.
Daily herbalized oil massage also provides a deeply soothing and balancing
effect to the entire nervous system. The motion of massage creates heat
and friction which enhances circulation and helps cleanse the areas of
chemical impurities that could be aggravating and hypersensitizing nerve tissues.

Diet and Nutrition

Following is the diet suggested for the patients suffering form Fibromyalgia and CFS
Vegetable juices and soups
Coconut water and Coconut milk
Juice of carrot, Cucumber, Beetroot
Cooked vegetables like squash, zucchini and pumpkin
Spices like cumin, coriander, ginger asafetida, garlic, fennel and turmeric.
Green salad with a dressing of lemon juice and a little salt
Khichadi (recipe made by cooking rice and mung dal, 1:1 or
1:2 proportion)

The patient of Fibromyalgia and CFS should avoid the following:
Eating hot, spicy and fried foods, sweets, foods
like brinjal, cabbage, Cauliflower, spinach, broccoli, okra and potatoes.
Too much tea, coffee, alcohol, white sugar, yogurt, chocolate, cocoa.
Sleeping during the day and staying up late at night
Mental tensions like worry, anxiety, fear, stress and grief.

Yoga for Stress Management and Improved Mental and Emotional Function:

It is well documented that fibromyalgia is often worsened by heightened
stress, anxiety and mental fatigue. There are hormonal changes and other
biochemical responses to stress that can aggravate the nervous system,
and the immune response. The sleep disturbance that is often created by
fibromyalgia symptoms increases fatigue which in turn increases one's
susceptibility to stress which in turn aggravates the fibromyalgia condition.

Meditation,Yoga, Pranayama and studying of spiritual philosophy are all
recommended for supporting personal healing and relaxation of the mind.
Efforts should be made to increase the Sattvic quality of mind.

Yogasana: Various stretching exercises are known to have a positive effect on
fibromyalgia. Regular practicing of sets of different postures are helpful in
creating a healthy flexibility throughout the body. Yogic breathing practices
will also create a state of restful alertness in mind and body.
Progressive deep relaxation, i.e., shavasana (Corpse posture) brings about a
relaxed state of mind which prepares the individual for meditation.

Lifestyle and Daily Routine

One of the most important factors for balancing Vata and maintaining stability
in the nervous system is to have a lifestyle that does not disturb natural bodily
rhythms. When we eat, sleep and exercise in constantly fluctuating and
disturbing patterns, the body loses its natural balancing cycles. Therefore
regularity in our daily routine can be extremely effective in reducing Vata imbalances.

Ayurvedic Herbs:

- Decoction of the roots of ten herbs (Dashamularishtam) should be given in
the dose of 30 ml., twice daily.
- Daily use of the Ayurvedic compound 'Triphala choorna' is recommended
to cleanse the colon.
- Half a teaspoon of turmeric powder with warm water helps to reduce pain
and inflammation in Fibromyalgia. Dosage: twice a day
- Garlic is useful for detoxification and to enhance immune system function.
- Guggul is a very helpful herb for relief of pain.
- Licorice root supports the glandular system and acts in the body like cortisone,
but without the harmful side-effects. Caution: If overused, licorice can elevate
blood pressure. Do not use this herb on a daily basis for more than seven
days in a row. Avoid it if you have high blood pressure
- Ginger Tea. Ginger is a good alternative to aspirin to relieve minor aches and
pains. Steep 1 teaspoon of the grated root in 8 ounces of hot water for 10 minutes.
Strain. Add honey for taste, if you like. Alternatively, take 1 to 2 Grams of
powdered ginger a day with food.

Implants for missing facial organs (EAR, NOSE, EYES)

Over the last decade, there has been a very rapid development in technical possibilities to provide patients with facial prostheses retained by skin penetrating implants after ablative tumor surgery. The use of Osseo integrated implants [http://www.scientificdentalclinic.com] in the patient who has undergone radiotherapy is also possible.

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

The literature indicates that facial prostheses were used in China as early as 2300B.C. In ancient Egypt, prostheses were used to cover facial disfigurement. One of the most well-known people to wear a nasal prosthesis was the Danish astronomist Tycho Brahe, who died in 1601. Brahe lost his nose in a duel and wore a prosthesis made of silver; the most commonly used prosthetic material at that time. In the mid-19 th century, prostheses were made from leather, enamel, and porcelain. After the Great War in Europe, a large number of soldiers came back with facial defects, and the first organized services to provide these soldiers with prostheses were established in Germany and the United Kingdom. Papier-mâché and gutta-percha were introduced to make the prosthesis more natural looking and also to reduce the weight. Subsequently, the same technique was used to help patients who had defects secondary to infectious diseases such as leprosy and also tumor patients. Bulbulian, a dentist based at the Mayo clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, was the first to advocate the use of a latex compound. After World War II, acrylic was introduced as a reliable material but had the disadvantage of being very hard.
Silicone rubber was a new material introduced in the late 1970s that could be made soft to follow the defect perfectly. For the first time, the edges could also be made thin. However, when such silicon prosthesis was kept in place with glue, the edges soon became discolored and lost their softness.

There are two very important properties that prosthesis must possess. It must approximate the defect area both in shape and color, and the retention must be good enough to keep the prosthesis safely in place during daily activities. Glue is frequently used for retention but also has disadvantages. The skin and the prosthesis have to be cleaned following removal, and exact positioning when placing the prosthesis is not very easy. Sweating will impair the adhesive properties of the glue. When the prosthesis is attached to glasses, the cosmetic result is poor due to the weight of the prosthesis, which causes a gap between the surgical defect and orbit.
One of the few reports on the use of craniofacial prostheses was published in 1978 by investigators from Rose-well Park. In this study, patients who had undergone craniofacial surgery were rehabilitated with acrylic prostheses secured with adhesive. Less than 50% of the patients used their prostheses long term, and fewer could tolerate wearing their prostheses for the entire day. Compliance was decreased because of skin irritation and poor cosmesis with the prosthesis in place.
Since 1979, we have used silicone rubber prostheses retained by Osseo integrated, skin penetrating implants made from commercially pure titanium for the rehabilitation of patients with post-tumor surgery defects. Since that time, more than 300 patients with defects of the external ear, orbit, nose, and midface have undergone implant surgery in our Implants Unit.

OSSEOINTEGRATION

The term Osseo integration was coined by professor P.I.Branemark in the 1970s to describe a direct contact between living haversian bone and a loaded implant surface. Branemark and associates have identified a number of prerequisites necessary for Osseo integration of titanium implants. The technique of implantation must be carried our with a high degree of precision to achieve initial implant stability. The implant itself must have properties that are compatible with the host tissue to prevent rejection. Several factors important to Osseo integration have been identified: the type of implant material, structure of the implant, implant surface, implant site, bone quality, surgical technique, and loading conditions. A reference for a more comprehensive review can be found in the text entitled Advanced Osseo integration Surgery.
